Beware of Spam Email Scammers – Especially from Lawyers!

In 2024, businesses all over the United States have been prone to receiving scam spam emails more than ever before. These scam spam emails can oftentimes be easy to identify and delete, but some are crafted more carefully and in a more disguised manner to trick business owners into interacting with them.

This week, an Alexa Media Solutions (AMS) client received a spam email through a contact form on their website from someone who was posing as a representative from a law firm, accusing our client of using copyright-protected images on their website. Any business owner would be alarmed to receive an email like this if they immediately thought they were in any amount of legal trouble, so it’s important to know that scammers will always try to make their outreach look as legitimate as possible to trick you!

Here is the email received from our client:

This highly skilled scam artist took the time to research legitimate law firms and created a fake email using their domain. They also took the time to list detailed infringements of the law to seem more knowledgeable and threatening upon reading the email. It is important to know that scammers will always go the extra mile to get your attention and money. Watch out for these emails and always verify the validity of the email before clicking any links!

Several items in the email tipped us off that it was a scam. 1. The person listed as “legal officer” did not appear on the law firm’s website. 2. The scammer refers to the law firm as an LLC. The firm in question is an LLP. 3. The scammer asks the recipient to click on a link to a different website (in this case a hair salon) to download the document.

AMS Tips For Handling Scam Emails

To effectively shield your business from potential threats posed by scam emails, it’s crucial to adopt a vigilant and proactive approach. Here are some practical steps and measures to consider:

  1. Educate Your Team: Ensure that all members of your organization are aware of the common characteristics of spam and scam emails. Regular training sessions can help in recognizing and avoiding these threats.
  2. Implement Strong Email Filters: Utilize advanced email filtering solutions that can detect and quarantine suspicious emails before they reach your inbox.
  3. Verify Sender Details: Always double-check the sender’s email address and look for any discrepancies or anomalies that might indicate a scam.
  4. Avoid Clicking on Unknown Links: Instruct your team never to click on links or download attachments from unverified sources to prevent malware infections.
  5. Use Anti-Phishing Tools: Equip your systems with anti-phishing software that can offer an additional layer of protection against deceptive emails.
  6. Report and Delete: Encourage your team to report any suspicious emails to your IT department or a designated point of contact and then delete them from their inboxes.

By implementing these measures, you can enhance your defense against the evolving tactics of email scammers and safeguard your business’s integrity and security.
